This is an excellent topic with solid advice Lynda. There is this crazy desperation out there - organizations just want to be part of the social media groundswell, regardless of what it means or "how you do it." Thanks for your insight.

The product launch is a good analogy. When you launch a product, your communications plan is based on the best way to communicate with your target audience. If social media is the right way, use it. If it's not, don't use it. Nothing says you have to engage if it doesn't make business sense.

it's amazing what a bit of logic can bring to a discussion. yes, we need to ask these questions of our clients/bosses regarding social media since it's such a new platform and quite frankly i see virtually no companies using it with any strategic long term messaging at the heart of their messages. Perhaps if approached more like a "product launch campaign" it would be easier to get the stakeholders to take the results of the platform more seriously?
